Is Twitter the New Google?
When search engine marketing first got established it was all marketers and businesspeople could talk about. Google became the God of the Internet and everyone seemed to be bowing down to worship the spiders or bots. Today, social media websites like Twitter seem to be getting as much if not more press and Facebook seems to be a strong competing God giving Google a run for its money.
Is it possible for Twitter or Facebook to obtain the amount of power that Google has had for years? Some may say yes it is possible, but in all likelihood these monsters of the Internet will learn to work with one another rather than against one another.
Successful marketers already know that social media and search engine marketing can work well together. They can be merged to form a powerful marketing plan that brings tons of targeted traffic to the best websites. Yet, they still seem to be competing when it comes to the power they wield over marketers and Internet searchers.
Different Forms of Power
When you look closely at how social media sites like Twitter and Facebook operate, you realize that they have a different type of power than the big search engines like Google. Social networking sites are powerful in that they can help marketers reach their target market in a very personal manner, but they can only control or dictate behavior and marketing practices within their own sites.
Google has a different type of power that extends well beyond how marketers behave on . The power of this search engine extends to all websites across the Internet. If a website does not abide by the rules set out by Google it can be blacklisted and marked off of the search engine results pages.
This means very little traffic floating into that website while more is transferred to competing sites. It is quite literally the death blow to many online businesses.
Social media sites just don’t have that type of power today. They can close accounts and prevent certain people from remaining active in their communities for not following their rules, but they cannot set down a company’s website or prevent others from finding them online.
Rather than thinking of Google and Twitter or Facebook as competitors, think of them as resources for an effective marketing strategy. The best strategies today will take advantage of all that social media websites have to offer while still living up to the rules and standards set up by Google.
Google is a powerful force over Internet marketing and that isn’t likely to change in the near future. There are other search engines that wield quite a bit of power as well, but they are powerful because they have the same type of influence as Google. Social media sites don’t have as far a reach, so they just don’t have the power to become the new Google completely.
Right now, the best strategy is to see these forms of marketing as two different options that can be taken advantage of fully. You can Twitter until your fingers turn blue and communicate with your market directly through a Facebook group and still have a thriving website that Google loves. That is the key to success with online marketing today.
